Twice the Pain
Title: Twice the Pain.
*
It shouldn’t hurt this much.
There had been pain, yes, but that was to be expected, and it had all stopped anyway, and everything was so much better now. There is no pain and he feels so much stronger and so much more free than before, and wasn’t it just a delight to find that he could climb trees like that? The man who did this said something, but he wasn’t listening because it didn’t really matter, did it, and where did his knives go, and oh, wasn’t it just lovely how the light glinted off those glasses. Not as lovely as the one wearing the glasses, though.
And then another came and there was battle and fighting and all that. The other wanted the girl, and they’d fight him off and he’d be dead, then. Not just dead, but dead-dead. Dead like a doornail-dead. Bad-dead, corpse-dead, not good-dead, good-dead like him, or like his pretty shiny in glasses. And then there was the taste of blood in his mouth and they went to fight and everything was as it should be.
Something was wrong, though, and there was pain where there should be none, and why did it feel like his heart was being ripped out and he certainly knew what that felt like, didn’t he? But he shouldn’t feel pain, because he was here and the battle was over there, and he was nowhere near it, unlike his pretty shiny who was there and then not there and all here and there and falling apart and bleeding even if there should be no blood and why did it hurt so much?
There was pain, yes, but it shouldn’t be, because they were strong and powerful and all heartless and there wasn’t supposed to be more pain or more blood ever again, but the blood and pain was there and his pretty shiny wasn’t and there was more pain at that and anger and rage and anger again, and wouldn’t vengeance be sweet as the taste of blood on his pretty shiny’s lips had been if he tore the other apart. Vengeance for his pretty shiny and for the mess they where in and for the pain that shouldn’t be there and for the hole in his pretty suit but mostly for his pretty shiny who wasn’t shiny anymore and wasn’t anything anymore.
And then he launched himself at the other to get his revenge, but the other launched something back and he knew that weapon, it could penetrate Kevlar and blow it up, and he knew that there would be more pain and blood and smoke and explosions and death, more death, and he couldn’t bring himself to really mind because it didn’t really matter, did it, when they were dead and re-dead, and there was no reason, no point, no fun, not without his people and without his pretty shiny and there was no pain?
Just welcome oblivion and no more pain, blood, loss, death, anything. Nothing.
